General strike in France

General strike in France. Almost all traffic will be stopped

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that a general strike is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6, 2023 in the country, which is expected to cause massive transport disruptions at the national level. Road, rail and air transport are under the crosshairs.

The operation of the city’s public transport will also be disrupted due to the planned demonstrations in the cities. Unions are calling on air traffic controllers to join the strike, which could lead to changes in flight schedules. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) requires airlines to cancel some flights.

Tomorrow’s strike is aimed at the pension reform proposed by President Emmanuel Macron, which has been hotly debated in France in recent months.

The reform proposed by the French president aims to change the retirement age from 62 to 64. The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) requires retirement at age 60 or even earlier for certain occupational categories. The government wants to impose a pension reform, contrary to the opinion of the population and trade unions.

The government’s goal is not to save our pension system, but to make money on behalf of workers. 95 percent workers reject this reform. This is a real denial of democracy,” the CGT trade union says in a recently issued strike call.

According to Reuters, the French authorities plan to send 11,000 police officers to fight the protests on Tuesday, including 4,000 in Paris alone. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said that the police “will ensure the safety of the demonstrations and guarantee the right of citizens to demonstrate.”

In addition, a possible strike on June 7 is expected in Italy, but so far it is known that it will be aimed at air transport, although complications in road transport may also occur.
